The Drought Goddess.Dream of the World

The Drought GoddessDream of the World presents a dream of the world’s creation through the combination of Nanguan music and ancient mythology. Three performers as well as the musicians collectively bring to life the mythological characters dreamed by the Drought Goddess in the live performance, which tells a time when the cosmos is still asleep in the black-and-white dream realm reminiscent of the Chinese ink painting. In order to transform the world into a splendid, colorful one, these mythological figures try to awaken the Drought Goddess. Making an evocation in the theatrical space, these gods and spirits from the ancient Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing) follow the time-honored melodies of Nanguan, and at times, sing the poetic verses written in the form and meter similar to those in The Book of Odes and Hymns (Shih Ching) and The Song of Chu (Chu Ci), and whisper in a familiar yet strange mythological language inspired by the ancient Mandarin tunes at other times. We, their audience from millions of years later, on the other hand, cannot help but being drawn to the story about their endless grievance, discontent, resentment and desire.

The Drought Goddess.Dream of the World originates from TheDrought Goddess, performed at the 2009 Avignon Off Festival in France, andserves as the first episode of the Revolutionary Mythology Trilogy. Comparingto the Taipei debut version in 2008, which was carried out in a pensive stylewith a slower pace, the Avignon Off Festival version and The Drought Goddess.Dream of the World are enwrapped in a slightlyjoyful and fast-paced atmosphere. The characters in the work are all inspiredby the ancient classic, Classic of Mountains and Seas. However, theirpersonality, along with their desires and feuds, are newly envisioned.Mythology is the reflection of the mind; and contemporary theater, charactersand mythologies are our alluring dreams at night.
